About the brand NEC

NEC stands for Nippon Electric Company, Ltd. so named before rebranding it to NEC Corporation. It is a Japanese-based multinational company, headquartered in Minato, Tokyo. The company specializes in information technology and electronics products. Now, it also focuses on cloud services, IoT platforms, artificial intelligence, electronics, musical systems, network, defence systems, etc. It is one of the top-rated corporations in the world today, focusing on the latest IT solutions like AI-based processes, cloud storage, and computing, mainly. The manufacturing sector is not as strong as it used to be, as its focus and goals have changed since the beginning of the 21st century.

NEC is a corporation that belongs to the Sumitomo Group, Japan’s biggest corporate alliance, which came together for trade purposes and achieving the common goal of becoming better. The alliance includes over 25 large-scale industrial giants of Japan covering all the major fields of business. The rules and guide system that serves as a base for the alliance was founded by a Buddhist Monk, Masatomo Sumitomo (based on the details from a bookshop in Kyoto) in 1615.

History of the brand, NEC

The beginning of NEC dates back to 1898 when Takeshira Maeda and Kunihiko Iwadare started their business under the name Nippon Electric Limited. The meeting with Walter Tenney Carleton, an international businessman, and owner of Western electric, who was interested in the phone market of Japan, led to the birth of a joint-stock company managed by Iwadare, Maeda, and Carleton.

In the period between 1900 and 1909, the company started growing more and more with new products like common battery switchboards, telephone sets, etc. Also, Iwadare’s visit to the manufacturing unit of Western Electric in the USA made him change the foundation of NEC. New rules, payment systems, working times - were all set, making the company’s growth rapid.

The company faced huge damage to its manufacturing sectors in Tokyo during the 1923 Kanto Earthquake. Many staff lost their lives in the disaster. The company took some time to get back on its feet. By 1924, the Mita plant that was almost destroyed was redeveloped by the firm and focused on manufacturing electron tubes and automatic switching systems for ATMs.

The next 75 years were significant as the company grew in power as they started manufacturing home appliances, computers, and accessories. From 2000, they focused on adapting to newer technologies, and many joint-ventures were signed up with big names in the field like Samsung, Nissan, Lenovo, etc. They have had their fair share of downfalls as well as very successful ventures in business.
