Statistics show that nearly two-thirds of all homes in Australia have an air conditioning unit. Unfortunately, the majority of people don’t know how to take good care of their air conditioning unit. If you want to get the best service from your AC, then you need to ensure that it is well maintained. There are many benefits to having a well-maintained air conditioner and some of them include prolonged lifespan, increased comfort, saves cost and cleaner air. Not every problem requires the attention of an air conditioner repair expert. Some problems are simple and can be corrected with few adjustments to the AC. Below are ways to keep your air conditioning unit in good condition and running smoothly.

1. Check air filters

Air filters play a crucial role in an air conditioner. They help to ensure that the air is clean. Air filters also help to block viruses, pollen, dust and moulds that can cause serious health problems such as headaches, fatigue and chest problems to family members. Unfortunately, air filters usually get dirty with time, that is why they need to be changed regularly. An air conditioner that has dirty filters has to work harder to keep your home cool. Clogged filters can affect the AC motors, coils and blower making it impossible for the AC to operate smoothly. The number of times you need to change the air filters depends on overall indoor air quality level or air pollution around your house, pet in your home and the filter that your AC uses. However, air conditioner repair experts recommend that you should change air filters in your AC at least once in 3 months. Ensure that you replace the air filter with the right size that is recommended for your unit.

2. Replace thermostat batteries

A well-functioning thermostat can reduce your energy bill by up to 15%. Most air conditioner service usually calibrate the AC thermostat at least once a year. However, the thermostat battery can go low before routine maintenance and if it is not corrected on time, then you may incur huge energy bills. If you notice that your AC is not regulating temperature as it used to, then chances are that the thermostat batteries are low and needs to be replaced.

3. Clean the outside of your AC

This is a very important maintenance tip that many people usually overlook. Cleaning outside of the AC will help to prevent it from breaking down because of excessive heat. The central part of the air conditioning unit is where crucial components such as the condenser coil and the motor are located. These components need a free flow of air in order to function smoothly. If dirt, dust, and leaves cover the outside part of the AC, then it will be unable to release heat efficiently. As a result, it will be forced to operate for a long period of time in order to cool your house. To avoid this, ensure that you clean the outside central part of the AC to ensure that there is a free flow of air.

4. Ensure the condenser is clear

Most AC condenser usually get clogged with dirt especially when the AC has not been used for a long period of time. This can hinder the free circulation of air preventing the air conditioner from operating smoothly. It is therefore important to check the condenser at least once every month to clear debris around it.

In conclusion, proper AC maintenance will ensure that it runs smoothly. However, besides conducting the above-mentioned maintenance, it is crucial to hire a reputable air conditioner service to conduct a thorough inspection and repair at least once or twice a year.
