Winter is long gone, and now the tropical heat of summer forces you to turn your Air Conditioner back ON. The first pleasing wafting breeze of an AC is a delightful experience for all of us. Few of us know it might cause more harm than good if we fail to consider some facts pertinent to the AC machinery.

Have you thought about what happens if the AC does not start? What if it does not make your space as cool as it is supposed to? You will have to pay bills without getting any advantage. What if some part of AC machinery is damaged and turning it ON might cause a total malfunction? All such things are more likely to happen when you return from a long winter break and hastily switch on  your AC ON to beat the first summer heatwave.

To help you combat this unpleasant situation, we have developed a list of a few things. You must have them on your checklist before turning your AC back ON for Summer.

#1 Check Indoor Equipment

An Air Conditioner possesses two types of equipment, indoor and outdoor. Having a quick overview of both is essential. Each type has several components that you need to cover for better AC analysis.

  • Check Copper lines: One of them is the longer one. Check its temperature. If it is cold, it is a good sign for you to turn on the AC.
  • Thermostat: If your thermostat has malfunctioned, consider replacing it. The position of the thermostat is of great value as it must not be located near the heat source.
  • Electrical connections: If circuit breakers and electrical connections are perfectly aligned, you are good to go.
  • Cooling Coil: If the refrigerant line has ice around it, it indicates freezing of the evaporator coil. It could result in power loss without cooling generation.
  • Spot Leaks: If your AC system has some leaks, the machine will run out of refrigerant. Therefore, it is mandatory to pay attention to leaks and get them repaired by an HVAC technician.

#2 Check Outdoor Equipment

Take off the sheets from the outdoor unit of AC. The very next step is to check the condenser. Remove excess water and impurities to clean it. Also, check if the refrigerant lines are insulated.

Air filters and ducts help you judge the performance of your AC. It is recommended to replace the air filters regularly. After the winter season, while turning your AC ON in spring, changing air filters is a must. Check AC vents; they must not be blocked.

#3 Turn it ON for a while

Now that you have completed all the initial steps of AC inspection before turning it ON after an extended period of inaction, let’s have a test drive. A test drive of the AC would include turning it on for a short while and checking its performance. Wait for a few minutes; if everything seems normal, you can use AC. If hot air prevails everywhere and a dank smell is blown out for a long period of time, you must hire a professional AC technician.

The Bottom Line

If you want to utilize your machinery efficiently for longer, regular maintenance is obligatory. It must be performed at least once, or ideally, twice a year. If you want to keep your AC fully functional and operational, hire top-notch professionals. They will repair/tune/service your machine bringing the best out of it.
