A key part of air conditioner maintenance is to have it cleaned regularly. If you do not have your air conditioner installation cleaned often, then there will be a build-up of dust. This can trigger allergies and, of course, it will make your air conditioning system a lot less efficient. Thankfully, it isn’t too hard to clean your air conditioning vents. These tips will help.

What you will need

To carry out this job, you don’t actually need that much in the way of tools. You will need:

  • A screwdriver. Make sure that you have the right screwdriver for your vents.
  • A vacuum cleaner. Preferably an industrial one, but your typical household one will do just fine.
  • A brush

If you haven’t cleaned your air conditioner vents in a while, then you may also want a small amount of warm water, a bit of soap, and a lint-free cloth. You will also need something to dry up the mess.

Turn off your air conditioner

You should not be cleaning the vents until the unit has been turned off. While the risk of something serious happening is quite low, you probably still want to reduce that risk as much as possible. This is a job that is only going to take five to ten minutes per vent anyway. You aren’t going to be overheating!

Unscrew the vent cover

Once the unit is turned off, you can unscrew the vent cover. Make sure that you put those screws in a safe place. The last thing you want to do is to suck them up with the vacuum cleaner, right?

Cleaning the vent

Start by brushing the vent down. Just a light brushing. A toothbrush is good for this. It will help to loosen up a bit of the dust. If you clean your air conditioner vents regularly, then you won’t need to do much more than this.

Once you have loosened up the dust, vacuum it up! You may need to use the brush adapter on your vacuum to do this. Try and vacuum up as much dust as you can. You may not be able to get it all, but you should get most of it. Don’t forget to vacuum the area around the vent too.

Replace the vent cover

Now, make sure you replaced the vent cover! You will also need to ensure that it is screwed on properly. The cover should help prevent the majority of dust flying in if it is attached properly.
